P5: Post-production techniques and processes to produce a media product
- P5: Post-production Techniques
This is the original unedited version of the photo that i used for my Juice WRLD 'Anti' magazine.
I chose to edit all of my photos in Photoshop as that is a professional photo editing tool and i used photoshop to finish the photo the way i wanted for my magazine. The first thing i did to the photo was change the levels of the photo, which included brightness and contrast.
Next i removed all of the blemishes and imperfections that my model has using the Spot healing tool and healing brush.
Next i used the object selection tool and cut out the models head so i could have a seperate layer. Then i pasted the new head layer and renamed it above so that i adjustments i made on layers below wouldnt affect it.
On the photo layer i added a hue/saturation edit to turn the green leaves into a cool purple colour to better match my genre. Also, i edited the brightness and contrast of the picture to ensure i had the correct shades and colours and intensity. Also this changed the colour of the jacket however I preferred this colour so I kept it.
This is me creating my masthead for my magazine in a separate photoshop document. I created this just using the pen tool and paint bucket tool. Also i copied that so i had 2 layers of it and rasterised it and added outer glow and a stroke to make the logo look simple, modern and luxurious.
I copied the masthead from the document i created it in and pasted it into my magazine front cover.
These are fonts i used for my Anti magazine: Lemon Milk and Kosans demo.
Here i have used the text tool to write my text and behind the important text i included a rectangle box using the rectangle shape tool to ensure the text stands out more compared to the rest of the text.
Here you can see i added the ..... that states 'free posters inside' as an insentive to get people to purchase. I placed this at the top so people see it straight away and it can also be seen if the magazine was stacked on a shelf.
I also added some features of the magazine such as Polo G, Trippie Redd and rap news such as The Kid Laroi's new song A Thousand Miles. I added in my barcode which i created on a barcode generator website.
Finally, i added a date line to show which edition of the magazine it is, which i placed under the A in the masthead.
Here is my finished front cover.
Contents Page
To start the contents page i dropped my background image into photoshop, which is the same backdrop as the front cover however it was a different angle. In a seperate document i edited the photo of my model such as the brightness, shadows and highlights to make it look more appealing.
Then i used the spot healing tool to make sure i removed all blemishes and imperfections from my model.
Then i used the object selection tool to cut out my model and then i copied and pasted it into the document with the background.
Then i also pasted my masthead to the top of the page to match my front cover.
On the background layer, I added hue and saturation edits to also match the background colours to front cover. However the contents page looks more blue whereas the front cover looks more purple.
I used the type tool to create a big contents heading at the top of the page and changed the text colour to purple
Then i added a big outer glow on the contents word to create importance to the heading. I also copied the text and rasterised one layer then created a glow overlay to make the text appear like it is glowing.
Then i created 3 white squares using the rectangle tool for the main headings and 3 black boxes for the page numbers and titles.
In all of the boxes i used the Lemon Milk font and in the first box i wrote about who the magazine is based on.
In the second box i talk about his fashion and what Juice WRLD would wear.
In the 3rd box i talk about performances that Juice WRLD did and his big 2019 Rolling Loud performance.
Here is my finished contents page.
Double Page Spread
I created my double page spread in photoshop. First i had to makes sure the page was the correct size, so when i created the photoshop document i used A4 as a template and doubled the width to create the size of a double page.
First i inserted my picture, which was a picture of my model using hand signs similar to those that people he is representing use. I used the object select tool to crop out the model from the background and placed in in a similar place to the magazine i am using for inspiration.
Then i begin using text tool and placing my title, and experimenting with different fonts and layouts to see what looks better for my genre. I made sure when i was making my double page i followed the codes and conventions that other magazines use. I made sure all fonts i used were bold and big to ensure it is modern and impactful.
Then i created the background from the same backdrop of the front cover and contents page however i zoomed in to the leaves and it gave a cool, unique pattern that i thought matched better. I used a saturation slider and changed the brightness and hue to match the colour and vibrance to the front cover and contents page. Also, i added a drop shadow to my text to make it stand out more from the background.
I created a drop cap on the 'J' so the readers can see where the article begins and to draw the reader's attention to that page. I used the same Lemon Milk font again as it is best suited to my magazine's genre and audience. I finally got all the text for my magazine and placed it in the correct parts of the text box and space it out equally.
Here i type the quote and change the colour to a light pink colour to highlight it to the readers. I also used the same pink colour for the drop cap 'J' to make sure it stood out.
Here is my finished Double Page:
Strengths and Weaknesses
Now that i have explained the steps and tools that i have used to create my Anti magazine, I will now weigh the strengths and weaknesses of it. The client brief asked me to create 4 pages of a magazine, which included a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. I have followed the client brief by creating a rap & hip-hop / Juice WRLD magazine with all of those pages.
I have many strengths to my magazine, here are the strengths of my magazine. I have followed and copied codes and conventions of other magazines. I did this by making sure the layout of my magazine fits the layouts of other magazines that already exist. Another strength is that the content in my magazine fully relates to the genre and constantly focuses on Juice WRLD. I ensured this by taking relevant photographs and creating appropriate graphics. Also, i have used darker colours to ensure the audience i target are older and mature, as the audience i want to aim at is 18-25-year-olds.
Although i had many strengths to my magazine, there are some areas where i think i could have improved. I didn't take many different photos of my model so i didn't get the best possible quality such as some may have looked fuzzy, or the poses could have been more appropriate. Also, i could have got the model to wear a more specific outfit so that i didn't have to take more time to edit their clothing how i wanted it to be.
